My old buddy, Rudolph Wanderone (Minnesota Fats)

Fats used to come hear my band.  Well, he used to come to the Hilltop, west of Murphysboro, IL for the night life, anyway.
One night he showed me a check he had received from the previous week's appearance on "Wide World of Sports".  My memory doesn't serve very well, but I seem to recall the check was for around $50,000, a nice hour's work for what would have been about 1985.
Fats was definitely the greatest "hustler" of all time.  That's probably the reason they chose him as the basis for the great movie "The Hustler" with Jackie Gleason playing the role.  Games he wouldn't have necessarily won by dint of his skill, he won with his mouth.  He would utilize non-stop braggadoccio during every match or demonstration he ever was in.  He even beat Willie Mosconi quite often, because Willie was put on edge by Fats' blathering.
